Words Allowed in Word Colony® Original

Before starting a game, players must agree on the allowed words. Players will be able to determine which sub-rules to follow and what type of game to start. They can create new word-building rules, or follow the standard rules described below.

Good to know: *Recommended thinking time for word building: 20-30 seconds. Optionally, a timer can also be used.

Standard Word Colony® rules for creating words:

 

Any word that is found in a standard English dictionary can be used in the game: nouns, adjectives, pronouns, articles, numerals and verbs. For these, all the correct inflectional forms are allowed, with the exceptions below. 

Alternatively, players can use American Heritage Dictionary [access here] or Cambridge Dictionary [access here] if they cannot agree on the existence of certain words.

ARE permitted, including:

verbs in the infinitive, but without the preposition “to” (e.g. “ to  do”, “ to  have”);
 personal pronouns (e.g. “he”, “you”, “their”, “me”, “him”, “her”);
spelled out numbers (e.g. “two”, “fourteen”);
days of the week and months of the year (e.g. “Thursday”, “March”);
musical notes (e.g. “DO”, “RE”, “MI”);
currency names (e.g. “Euro”, “Dollar”, “Penny”);
prepositions (e.g. “with”, “above”, “towards”, “as”);
diminutives (e.g. “booklet”, “darling”, “icicle”);
augmentatives (e.g. “megastore”, “overlord”, “grandparent”);
words with prefixes and suffixes (e.g. “misspell”, “happyness”).
ARE NOT permitted:

proper nouns (e.g. “George”, “London”, “Everest”);
abbreviations/acronyms (e.g. “aka”, “asap”, “U.S.”, “F.B.I.”);
words with an apostrophe or hyphen (e.g. “baby’s”, “last-minute”);
groups of two or more words separated by a space (e.g. “to have”, “all in”, “high heels”);
interjections (e.g. “ooh!”,” ouch!”, “yippee!”, “yeah!”);
loanwords from other languages, except for words that are already in the standard English dictionary;
words that have only one letter (e.g. “a”, “i”);
words considered to be racial or ethnic slurs.
