Word Colony® Kids: Trivia Quest Guide

TRIVIA QUEST

game version

This is the standard version of the game. It involves answering questions, collecting Letter Cards, and building tremendous Word Colonies to gain Stars.

Children will improve their cognitive function, knowledge, vocabulary, logical reasoning, fine motor skills, emotional and social skills, and more.

COMPONENTS:

34 x Question Cards

119 x Letter Cards (making a total of 34 words)

48 x Star Cards

28 x 1-star cards
14 x 2-star cards
6 x 3-star cards

3 x Bonus Cards

1 x Guide

1 x Bell

* Game components refer to those in the Word Colony Kids: My First Words edition. Components may vary by edition.

GAME SETUP:

1

Place the bell in the middle of the table so that each player can easily reach it.

2

Separate the Star Cards into three different piles according to the number of stars on them: 1, 2 or 3 stars.

3

Shuffle the Question Cards and Bonus Cards together, then place them face down in a common pile of cards.

NoteAlternatively, the moderator can hold this deck of cards for the duration of the game and choose the questions they want to read from those with corresponding groups of cards on the table for selecting answers. The cards will be identified by the picture.

4

Arrange the Letter Cards in groups based on the image on the back, and choose 16 groups of Letter Cards to be arranged on the table in a circular setup around the bell (letters facing down). Here’s how the game setup will look on the table:

If you prefer, you can include all 34 Letter Card groups, in which case, the circle setup will be larger around the bell. Each group will have identical pictures on the back and will form a word together during the game.

NoteWords in the game have three levels of difficulty based on the number of letters and complexity: 1 star (easy), 2 stars (medium) or 3 stars (hard).

NoteFor the first game, we suggest setting up either four or eight 1-star groups around the bell and then observing the players’ progress.

GAMEPLAY:

1

Reading a Question Card

At the beginning of each new round, the moderator will draw (or choose) a Question Card and read the question aloud to the players.

NoteIf a Bonus Card is drawn, it is set aside, and another card is drawn from the deck until a Question Card is drawn. The Bonus Card will be awarded to the player who answers correctly in the current round.

2

Tapping the Bell & Giving the Answer

The players wait with their hands on the table thinking, and whoever knows the answer quickly taps the bell. The first player to tap the bell will then say the answer.

3

Collecting Letter Cards

If the answer is correct, the player will identify and collect the group of Letter Cards from the circle setup that matches the answer, aided by the image on the back.

NoteIf the answer is incorrect, the player will not collect any cards this round. Instead, the next player who tapped the bell after them will have a chance to give the answer, thus collecting the round’s stars.

4

Building the Word

After collecting the Letter Cards, the player will quickly build the word on the table using the letters and picture snippets on the cards.

The word will be built horizontally, on top of other words previously created on their table, if there are any, thus creating their own Word Colony.

5

Earning Stars

If the word was built correctly, the player will earn a Star Card containing the number of stars corresponding to the built word (1, 2 or 3 stars) and add it to their own star collection.

NoteIf no more 1-Star Cards are available during the game, players can exchange three of their own
1-Star Cards for a 3-Star Card, for example.

6

End of Round

New groups of Letter Cards can be added to complete the line-up in the vacant places in the circle setup. The moderator will then choose or draw a new Question Card and read it to the players, thus starting a new round of play.

7

Who wins the game?

The first player to collect 10 stars for their own Word Colony will be the winner of the game. Bonus Cards will also be counted, if any.
